Chen Yu-hsun was born in 1962 in Taipei. His 1994 first feature film, Tropical Fish, was awarded the Golden Horse Awards for best original screenplay, and the offbeat, distinctly Taiwanese sense of humour that permeates his works has become widely known as a trademark of Chen.
Chen Yu-hsun is a renowned commercial director and filmmaker, who has achieved fame for his unique sense of humour and is regarded as the master of comedies. Born in 1962, he earned a degree from the Department of Educational and Information Science (now the Department of Information and Library Science) at Tamkang University. And it was during his university years that he got hold of an opportunity to intern at director Wang Shau-di’s studio, which eventually led him to his true love – telling stories through images.
He shot his first feature Tropical Fish in 1994 after years of working with TV series. The film, commercially successful and critically acclaimed, was awarded the Blue Leopard Prize at Switzerland’s Locarno Film Festival and was regarded as one of the most remarkable comedies in the history of Taiwan cinema. His second film, Love Go Go (1997) was also well received.
Over his 30-year career, Chen Yu-hsun has garnered numerous awards, including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing Awards at the 57th Golden Horse Awards with his latest film, My Missing Valentine.
